Soccer has been around for hundreds of years, but started gaining popularity in the 1980’s in the United States. Most other countries call this sport "football" but in the United States, it is known as soccer. It has evolved over time to the game we know today. It is your job as a coach to understand the basics of the game and teach your players those basic skills and rules. Since the rules of soccer vary depending on the club/organization and age group you are working with, it is important to make sure you know the rules and expectations of your organization.
There is no right way to coach youth soccer. Some coaches may be loud and intense while another coach may be calm and quiet (Clark, 2000). Each age group has its own set of challenges. If you feel like the age of player you are working with is not a good fit for you and your coaching style, try another level. Just remember that your goal is to make soccer a fun experience for your players while teaching them how to work as a team, what good sportsmanship looks like and helping them become the best individuals and teammates they can be. These are great life lessons that all players can benefit from.
